Frequently asked questions

Which PSUs recruit through GATE scores?
Over 60 central PSUs hire engineering graduates using GATE — including ISRO, BARC, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, NTPC, PowerGrid, BHEL, BEL, HAL, NPCIL, NHPC, SAIL, Coal India and AAI. Each PSU releases its own notification with branch-wise vacancies, GATE score cut-offs and online application windows aligned to the GATE result cycle.
What is the difference between SSC JE and RRB JE?
SSC JE recruits Junior Engineers (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Quantity Surveying & Contracts) for central ministries and CPWD, BRO, MES, CWC and Farakka Barrage. RRB JE recruits Junior Engineers and Senior Section Engineers for Indian Railways across Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and IT branches. Both follow CBT-1 and CBT-2 selection patterns.
How can I prepare for ISRO and DRDO scientist exams?
ISRO Scientist/Engineer SC posts use a written exam followed by interview — syllabus mirrors GATE in Electronics, Mechanical and Computer Science. DRDO RAC selects through Centralised Online Test plus interview for entry-level scientist roles. Use our syllabus hub and previous papers archive for cycle-wise prep, and track admit card releases during active cycles.
Are diploma holders eligible for engineering recruitment?
Yes. Diploma holders qualify for SSC JE (with branch-relevant diploma), RRB JE Technician/Junior Engineer roles, state PSU technician posts, BHEL/BEL technician apprenticeships and Indian Navy/Army technical entries. Many central PSUs also hire diploma holders as Junior Technicians and Operators through separate notifications outside the GATE channel.
When are JEE Main, JEE Advanced and GATE notifications released?
NTA releases JEE Main notification in October-November for two attempts (January and April sessions). JEE Advanced notification follows the JEE Main result, conducted by an IIT each year for the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main scorers. GATE notification appears in late August by the host IIT/IISc, with the exam in February. Track JEE Advanced 2026 for the current cycle.

Engineering Recruitment Pathways

Engineering aspirants in India have three broad government recruitment channels: PSU hiring through GATE for B.Tech/M.Tech graduates, central and state engineering services for officer-cadre roles (Engineering Services Examination conducted by UPSC), and Junior Engineer recruitment via SSC JE and RRB JE for diploma and degree holders. Together these channels recruit over 30,000 engineers annually across central, state and PSU establishments.

GATE-based PSU Hiring

The GATE scorecard is valid for three years and forms the entry-point for most central PSU recruitment. Each PSU sets its own minimum cut-off and conducts a separate interview or document verification round. Top-tier PSUs like ISRO, BARC, IOCL and ONGC consistently demand GATE percentile above 95 for general category candidates in popular branches like Mechanical and Electronics.

Engineering Services Examination (UPSC ESE)

UPSC ESE recruits Class-1 officers for Indian Railways, CPWD, MES, BRO, CWC, Indian Defence Service of Engineers and other central engineering departments. Selection is through Preliminary, Mains and Personality Test stages. ESE officers form the technical backbone of Government of India's infrastructure delivery — see UPSC jobs hub for full notification tracking.

Engineering Entrance Tests

JEE Main is the gateway to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and most state engineering colleges. JEE Advanced (top 2.5 lakh JEE Main scorers) is the IIT entry test. GATE is for postgraduate (M.Tech) admission to IITs/NITs and PSU recruitment. Use our syllabus and previous papers hubs for full pattern, weightage and shift-wise paper archive across these tests.

Pairing Engineering with Other Government Pathways

Engineering graduates can also pursue UPSC CSE for civil services, SSC CGL Inspector and ASO posts, IBPS PO and SBI PO, and defence officer entries like TES and Tech Branches in Navy and Air Force. State PSUs in UP, Maharashtra and MP also recruit engineers regularly through state-specific notifications.
