Frequently asked questions

What are the main routes to join the Indian armed forces?
Officer entries include NDA after 12th, CDS after graduation, AFCAT for Air Force, INET for Navy, TES for engineering students, JAG for law graduates and SSC entries for various streams. Soldier and Agniveer entries cover GD, Tradesman, Clerk, Technical, Nursing Assistant and equivalent posts across services.
What is the eligibility for the Agniveer scheme?
Agniveer recruits unmarried Indian citizens aged 17.5 to 21 years for four-year service in Army, Navy or Air Force. Educational qualifications vary — 10th pass for GD, 12th pass with Maths-Physics-Chemistry for Technical roles. Physical and medical standards are strictly enforced through region-wise rallies and CEE.
When are NDA and CDS exam notifications released?
UPSC releases NDA notification twice yearly in December and June, with exams in April and September. CDS notification also comes twice yearly with exams in February and September. Both feed into officer training academies. Track our admit card hub for downloads and result hub for outcomes.
How does the SSB interview process work?
SSB is a five-day assessment of officer-like qualities through psychological tests, group tasks, individual obstacles, command tasks, lecturette and personal interview. Day 1 is screening — only those who clear it attempt the remaining four days. Recommended candidates undergo medical examination before merit list publication finally.
Are women eligible for defence officer entries?
Yes. Women can apply for NDA since 2022, CDS for OTA, AFCAT flying and ground duty branches, INET for Navy executive and education branches, plus various SSC entries across services. Permanent commission for women is now available across most non-combat arms following recent Supreme Court directions and policy changes.

Defence Recruitment Architecture

The Indian armed forces recruit through multiple parallel streams designed for different educational profiles and age groups. Officer cadres come via UPSC-conducted NDA and CDS, service-specific exams like AFCAT and INET, plus direct entry schemes for technical and specialist branches. Soldier ranks recruit through Agniveer rallies and centralised online entrance examinations.

Agniveer Scheme Explained

The Agnipath scheme launched in 2022 recruits youth for four years across all three services. After service, 25 percent are retained as regular soldiers and 75 percent get a Seva Nidhi corpus plus skill certification. Eligible candidates can transition into police jobs, RPF and CAPF roles with reservation benefits.

Preparation for Defence Written Exams

NDA tests Maths and General Ability, CDS tests English, GK and Maths (only first two for OTA), AFCAT tests reasoning, English, GK and quant. Use our syllabus hub for paper patterns and previous papers archive for cycle-wise practice. SSB preparation needs separate focus on personality and group dynamics.

Pairing Defence with Other Government Pathways

If defence selection takes time, run parallel preparation for SSC GD, state police and UPSC CAPF exams which share physical standards and overlapping syllabi. State aspirants from UP, Bihar and Rajasthan traditionally form the largest soldier recruitment pools annually.
