In-hand salary = Basic + DA + HRA + allowances − (NPS + professional tax + income tax). For a pay level 7 post (basic ₹44,900) in an X-class metro with about 55% DA, that works out to roughly ₹70,000–₹78,000 per month before income tax. Set your own pay level, DA and city below for an exact figure.

How to use this in-hand salary calculator

  1. Pick your pay level from the dropdown (it auto-fills the basic pay from the 7th CPC pay matrix), or type your basic pay directly.
  2. Enter the current DA %. Dearness Allowance is revised every January and July — use the latest figure (around 50–55% in 2026).
  3. Choose your city HRA class — X for metros, Y for other big cities, Z for smaller towns.
  4. Add any transport/other allowance and set the NPS % and professional tax. Your net in-hand salary updates instantly, with a full component breakdown.

How in-hand salary is calculated (the formula)

Under the 7th Pay Commission, your salary is built up from your basic pay plus allowances, then deductions are subtracted. The formula is:

Gross = Basic + DA + HRA + Transport/other allowance
DA = Basic × (DA% ÷ 100)
HRA = Basic × (HRA rate ÷ 100)  (30% / 20% / 10% for X/Y/Z cities)
NPS = (Basic + DA) × 10%
In-hand = Gross − NPS − Professional tax − Income tax

Note two things aspirants often miss: DA and HRA are both calculated on basic pay only (not on gross), and the NPS deduction is 10% of basic + DA (not of basic alone). Income tax depends on your personal declarations and the regime you choose, so it is not fixed here.

Worked example — pay level 7 (₹44,900 basic)

Take an Assistant Section Officer or Inspector post at pay level 7 (basic ₹44,900), posted in an X-class metro, with DA at 55%:

ComponentCalculationAmount (₹)
Basic pay44,900
Dearness Allowance44,900 × 55%24,695
House Rent Allowance44,900 × 30%13,470
Gross salary83,065
Less: NPS(44,900 + 24,695) × 10%− 6,960
Less: Professional tax− 200
Net in-hand (pre-tax)≈ 75,905

Add transport allowance (which varies by city and grade) and the figure rises further; subtract income tax and it settles lower. That is why the honest answer for level 7 is a range of roughly ₹70,000–₹78,000, not a single number — and why an interactive calculator beats a fixed table.

Frequently asked questions

How is in-hand salary calculated in the 7th Pay Commission?

In-hand salary = Basic pay + Dearness Allowance (DA) + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + Transport Allowance − deductions (NPS, professional tax and income tax). DA is a percentage of basic pay, and HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic for X, Y and Z class cities respectively.

What is the difference between basic pay and in-hand salary?

Basic pay is the fixed core of your salary from the pay matrix. In-hand (net) salary is what actually reaches your bank account after adding allowances like DA and HRA and subtracting deductions like NPS and tax. In-hand is usually much higher than basic once DA and HRA are added.

How much is DA and HRA on a government salary?

DA is a percentage of basic pay revised twice a year; in 2026 it is around 50–55%. HRA is 30% of basic in X-class metro cities, 20% in Y-class cities and 10% in Z-class towns (the rates in force once DA crosses 50%). Always confirm the current DA from the latest DoPT order.

What deductions are taken from a government salary?

The main deductions are the National Pension System (NPS) contribution of 10% of basic plus DA, professional tax (a few hundred rupees, varies by state), CGHS/medical, and income tax (TDS) if your income is taxable. This calculator lets you set NPS and professional tax; income tax depends on your personal declarations.

What is the in-hand salary for pay level 7 or level 6?

A pay level 7 post (basic ₹44,900) works out to roughly ₹70,000–₹78,000 in hand in an X-class city with about 55% DA, and a pay level 6 post (basic ₹35,400) to roughly ₹56,000–₹62,000, before income tax. Enter your exact DA and city above for a precise figure.

Is in-hand salary the same as gross salary?

No. Gross salary is basic plus all allowances (DA, HRA, TA) before any deduction. In-hand salary is gross minus deductions (NPS, professional tax, income tax). The calculator shows both so you can see the difference.
