SSC CGL salary 2026 depends on the post pay level (Level 4 to 8) and city of posting. The highest-paying post is Assistant Audit Officer (Pay Level 8, ~₹65,000 in-hand in metros); Inspector and Assistant Section Officer sit at Level 7. This guide maps every major post to its pay level, with approximate city-wise in-hand pay and the allowance breakdown.

TL;DR
- SSC CGL salary is decided by your post's pay level (Level 4 to Level 8) and your city of posting (X/Y/Z).
- The highest-paying post is Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer (AAO), Pay Level 8, with an in-hand of roughly ₹65,000 in metro (X) cities.
- Inspector posts (Income Tax, Central Excise) and Assistant Section Officer sit at Pay Level 7 (basic ₹44,900), in-hand roughly ₹58,000–₹62,000 in X-cities.
- Entry-level posts like Tax Assistant (Level 4, basic ₹25,500) start around ₹30,000–₹39,000 in-hand depending on city.
- Allowances (DA, HRA, TA) often add 60–80% on top of basic pay — so the pay level matters far more than the basic-pay number alone.
The single most useful thing to understand about SSC CGL salary is that there is no one number — your pay depends on which post you are allotted (which depends on your Tier-2 rank and preferences) and which city you are posted in. Two candidates who clear the same exam can take home very different amounts. This guide maps every major SSC CGL post to its 7th-CPC pay level, shows approximate in-hand pay by city, and explains the allowances that decide your real monthly figure.

What decides your SSC CGL salary
Three things, in order of impact:
- Pay level (Level 4–8). This fixes your basic pay under the 7th-CPC matrix and is the biggest lever.
- City classification (X / Y / Z). Metro X-cities pay 27% HRA, Y-cities 18%, Z-cities 9% — a meaningful gap.
- Dearness Allowance (DA). Revised by the government roughly twice a year; currently above 50% of basic, so it nearly matches your basic pay.
Your gross salary = basic pay + DA + HRA + Transport Allowance. Your in-hand is the gross minus deductions (NPS contribution, CGHS, professional tax). That is why the same pay level can show a ₹10,000 swing between a metro and a small-town posting.
SSC CGL post-wise pay levels (2026)
| Pay Level | Basic pay | Representative posts | Approx in-hand (X-city) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 8 | ₹47,600 | Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO) | ~₹65,000 |
| Level 7 | ₹44,900 | Income Tax Inspector, Central Excise / Preventive Officer / Examiner Inspector, Assistant Section Officer (CSS/IB/MEA), Assistant Enforcement Officer, Sub-Inspector (CBI), Inspector of Posts | ~₹58,000–62,000 |
| Level 6 | ₹35,400 | Assistant / Superintendent (various ministries), Junior Statistical Officer, Sub-Inspector (NIA), Divisional Accountant | ~₹48,000–52,000 |
| Level 5 | ₹29,200 | Auditor, Accountant, Senior Accountant | ~₹40,000–44,000 |
| Level 4 | ₹25,500 | Tax Assistant, Postal Assistant, Senior Secretariat Assistant / UDC | ~₹35,000–39,000 |
In-hand figures are approximate at the current DA and HRA slabs; they rise with each DA revision and are lower in Y- and Z-city postings. Treat them as a realistic band, not a fixed payslip.
The highest-paying post: AAO (Pay Level 8)
The Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer under the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) is the only Pay Level 8 post in SSC CGL, which makes it the most sought-after. With a basic pay of ₹47,600, the in-hand reaches roughly ₹65,000 in X-cities and around ₹55,000–₹59,000 in Y- and Z-cities. It is a gazetted Group B post with strong audit-domain career growth, which is why high rankers usually list it first in their preferences.
Inspector posts and ASO (Pay Level 7)
This is the band most aspirants target. Income Tax Inspector (CBDT) and Central Excise / Preventive Officer / Examiner Inspector (CBIC) are the glamour posts here for their field role and growth, both at Pay Level 7 with basic ₹44,900 and an in-hand near ₹58,000–₹62,000 in metros. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in the Central Secretariat, IB, or Ministry of External Affairs sits at the same level with a desk-based profile in Delhi. Assistant Enforcement Officer (AEO) in the Directorate of Enforcement and Sub-Inspector in the CBI are also Level 7 and prized for their investigative roles.
Mid and entry posts (Levels 6, 5, 4)
Pay Level 6 posts (basic ₹35,400) include Assistants in various ministries and the Junior Statistical Officer, with in-hand around ₹48,000–₹52,000 in metros. Pay Level 5 covers Auditor and Accountant roles (basic ₹29,200). Pay Level 4 — Tax Assistant, Postal Assistant, and Senior Secretariat Assistant/UDC — starts at basic ₹25,500 with an in-hand of roughly ₹30,000–₹39,000. These posts still carry the full central-government benefit package and clear promotion ladders, so the entry figure undersells the long-term value.
Allowances, deductions and what hits your account
The headline gross is built from basic pay plus DA (currently 50%+ of basic), HRA (27% / 18% / 9% by city), and Transport Allowance. From that gross, your in-hand is reduced by the NPS contribution (10% of basic + DA), CGHS, and professional tax where applicable. So a Level 7 post with a ₹44,900 basic shows a gross well above ₹70,000 but an in-hand nearer ₹58,000–₹62,000. The practical takeaway: chase the pay level and city, because the allowance stack — not the basic number — is what fills your account.
