SSC GD 2026 PET/PST Physical Standards by Category

After the SSC GD computer-based test comes the qualifying PST (height and chest measurement) and PET (running). This guide lists the category-wise height, chest, and running standards — male 5 km in 24 minutes, female 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes — plus how weight is assessed at the medical, so you know exactly what to train for.

By Pawan, Senior Editor — Defence & Railway desk. Published 22 May 2026. Last verified 22 May 2026 against the SSC GD Constable physical standards.

TL;DR

  • After the computer-based test, SSC GD has a PST (measurement) and a PET (running) that are qualifying — you must clear them to proceed.
  • Height (Gen/OBC): male 170 cm, female 157 cm; ST candidates and several hill/North-East categories get relaxations.
  • Chest (male only): 80 cm unexpanded with at least 5 cm expansion; not measured for women.
  • Running (PET): male 5 km in 24 minutes, female 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes (Ladakh region has separate, shorter standards).
  • Weight is not a pass/fail bar at PST — it is checked at the medical via BMI, so train for the run, not the scales.

The written test gets you to the SSC GD physical stage, but every year thousands of candidates who clear the CBT fall at the Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET) because they did not train for them. This guide lays out the category-wise height, chest, and running standards so you know exactly what to prepare for. For the full recruitment, see the SSC GD Constable 2026 page and the Police Jobs hub.

PST — height and chest standards

The Physical Standard Test measures height (all candidates) and chest (male candidates only).

Category Male height Female height Male chest (unexpanded / min expansion)
General / OBC / SC 170 cm 157 cm 80 cm / +5 cm
Scheduled Tribe (ST) 162.5 cm 150 cm 76 cm / +5 cm
Hill/North-East/Gorkha categories Relaxed per notice Relaxed per notice Relaxed per notice

Candidates belonging to specified hill and North-Eastern regions, Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Dogras, and certain tribal communities get height (and chest) relaxations — check the exact figures in the official notification, as they are region- and community-specific. Chest is not measured for female candidates.

PET — the running test

The Physical Efficiency Test is a timed run, qualifying in nature:

  • Male: 5 km in 24 minutes.
  • Female: 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes.
  • Ladakh region: separate, shorter standards — male 1.6 km in about 7 minutes, female 800 m in about 5 minutes.

The run is the single biggest reason candidates fail the physical stage, and it is also the most trainable. Build your endurance over weeks, not days — start jogging early in your preparation so that by the time the CBT result is out, the 5 km (or 1.6 km) target is comfortable rather than a shock.

Weight and medical

Unlike older norms, weight is not a rejection criterion at the PST. It is assessed at the Detailed Medical Examination (DME) through Body Mass Index, with a healthy range typically around 18–25. The medical also checks vision, hearing, flat feet, knock knees, and other standards. So the practical message is to train for the run and maintain general fitness; do not stress over a specific weight number at the measurement stage.

How to prepare for the SSC GD physical

Treat the physical with the same seriousness as the written exam. Begin running practice early — build from shorter distances to the full 5 km, focusing on completing it within time rather than sprinting. Maintain a balanced diet and general strength work. Verify your height and chest against your category standard well in advance; if you are borderline, get measured properly so there are no surprises on test day.

FAQs

What is the height requirement for SSC GD Constable 2026? / SSC GD ki height kitni honi chahiye?
General, OBC, and SC male candidates need a minimum height of 170 cm and female candidates 157 cm. Scheduled Tribe candidates need 162.5 cm (male) and 150 cm (female). Candidates from specified hill, North-Eastern, and certain other categories get further relaxations as listed in the official SSC GD notification.
What is the running standard for SSC GD PET? / PET mein kitni daud hai?
Male candidates must complete a 5 km run in 24 minutes, and female candidates must complete a 1.6 km run in 8.5 minutes. The Ladakh region has separate, shorter standards. The PET is qualifying, so you only need to finish within the time limit; it is not scored competitively, but failing it ends your candidature.
What is the chest measurement for SSC GD?
Chest is measured only for male candidates. The general standard is 80 cm unexpanded with a minimum expansion of 5 cm; Scheduled Tribe candidates have a slightly lower requirement of around 76 cm unexpanded. Female candidates do not undergo chest measurement. Exact category-wise figures are specified in the official notification.
Is there a weight requirement in SSC GD PST?
Weight is not a pass-or-fail criterion at the Physical Standard Test. It is assessed later at the Detailed Medical Examination using Body Mass Index, with a healthy range typically around 18 to 25. So you should focus on training for the run and overall fitness rather than worrying about a specific weight figure during the measurement stage.
Is the SSC GD physical test difficult to clear?
The PST measurements are straightforward if you meet your category's height and chest standards, but the PET running test is where most candidates struggle. It is very trainable, however — beginning endurance running several weeks before the test and building up to the 5 km or 1.6 km target makes it comfortable. Last-minute preparation is the main reason candidates fail.
Do female candidates have a chest measurement in SSC GD?
No, chest measurement applies only to male candidates. Female candidates are assessed on height and the running test, along with the standard medical examination. The female height requirement is 157 cm for General, OBC, and SC categories and 150 cm for Scheduled Tribe candidates, with relaxations for specified regions and communities per the official notice.
