• Marital status + nationality: Only unmarried male candidates are eligible for Agniveer (MR) Musician entry. Indian citizens including those from Nepal and Bhutan per the standard Indian Navy eligibility rules.

Selection Process

1. Online Application — Register on joinindiannavy.gov.in with mobile and email for OTP verification. Fill the application form with personal, educational and music-instrument details. Upload photo, signature, Class 10 certificate, music certification and any performance portfolio per the bulletin specifications.
2. Initial Screening — Indian Navy Headquarters screens applications based on age, education, music certification and category criteria. Shortlisted candidates receive a call letter for the Music Aptitude Test (MAT) at INS Kunjali in Mumbai or another designated Naval band centre.
3. Music Aptitude Test (MAT) — Live audition by Indian Navy music examiner panel. Candidates perform on their primary instrument plus sight-reading, pitch recognition, rhythm and ear-training assessments. Tabla candidates demonstrate taal recognition and basic compositions. 5. Medical Examination — Detailed Naval medical examination at the designated Indian Naval Medical Board centre. Vision, hearing, dental, chest X-ray, ECG and full physical assessment per Indian Navy medical standards for sailor cadre. Tattoos restricted to inside-forearm body area per current Naval policy.
6. Written Examination — Computer-Based Test of 50 multiple-choice questions over 30 minutes covering English (25%), Maths (25%), Science (25%) and General Knowledge (25%) at Class 10 level. +1 for correct answer, 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer. Final merit ranks candidates within the Music Aptitude Test-qualified pool.

Negative marking: Written examination has 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer. Music Aptitude Test, PFT and medical are qualifying stages (pass/fail) with no marks contributing to final merit beyond the written exam.

Music proficiency — what counts

Only MAT-qualified candidates proceed to PFT, medical and the final written exam. Final merit ranks within the MAT-qualified pool by written-exam marks. Without a clean MAT pass, no other stage matters.

Pay scale under Agniveer scheme

Agniveer Musicians enter the Navy on the standard Agniveer pay structure — ₹30,000 per month in Year 1, rising to ₹33,000 (Year 2), ₹36,500 (Year 3) and ₹40,000 (Year 4) as gross monthly emoluments. 30 percent of gross pay is contributed monthly to the Agniveer Corpus Fund, matched by an equal Government contribution, with the entire Seva Nidhi corpus of approximately ₹11.71 lakh paid out on exit at year 4. Free ration, uniform, medical and accommodation are provided throughout the 4-year tenure. Up to 25 percent of each Agniveer batch is selected for permanent retention as regular sailors based on merit, performance and Service requirement.

Training pathway

Selected Musician Agniveers undergo basic naval training at INS Chilka (Odisha) for approximately 16 weeks alongside general MR Agniveers, then move to INS Kunjali (Mumbai) for specialised music-branch training. Specialised training covers Naval band repertoire, marching-band fundamentals, ceremonial drill, instrument maintenance and ensemble performance. Total training duration is approximately 9 months before deployment to a Naval band unit.
