The RPSC RAS examination is conducted in three stages — a Preliminary screening test, a four-paper Main Examination, and an Interview. RAS Prelims syllabus (General Knowledge & General Science)
The single Prelims paper draws on a broad general-studies syllabus with a strong Rajasthan focus. The main topic areas are:

- Indian History — ancient, medieval and modern India, and the national movement.
- Geography of the World and India — physical, social and economic geography.

RAS Mains syllabus — the four papers
The Mains has four descriptive papers of 200 marks each. Broadly:
- Paper I — General Studies I: History, Art, Culture, Literature, Tradition and Heritage of Rajasthan; History of India and the World; Geography of Rajasthan, India and the World; and topics such as accounting, auditing and management.
- Paper II — General Studies II: Administrative Ethics; General Science and Technology; the Indian polity and Constitution; and the economy of the world, India and Rajasthan.
- Paper III — General Studies III: the Indian political system, world politics and current affairs; concepts of sports, yoga and behaviour; law; and leadership, human resource and public administration themes.
- Paper IV — General Hindi and General English: grammar, comprehension, précis, translation and composition in both languages.

Interview (Personality Test)
The Interview carries 100 marks and assesses your personality, awareness, judgement and suitability for administrative service. It is the final stage after the Mains result, and along with the Mains it decides your position in the final merit list.
How to prepare — a stage-wise strategy
Prelims: since it is qualifying only, aim to clear the cut-off comfortably. Prioritise the Rajasthan-specific history, geography, polity and economy, which carry heavy weight and are scoring, and keep current affairs (especially Rajasthan) updated. Practise with the 1/3 negative marking in mind — accuracy over reckless attempts.
Mains: this is where the exam is won. Because all four papers are descriptive, answer-writing practice matters as much as content — structure, word limits and point-wise clarity. Build strong notes on the Rajasthan GS areas and revise them repeatedly. Do not neglect Paper IV (Hindi and English), which is often underprepared and can swing the merit.
