Eligibility

Qualification: a bachelor's degree (in any discipline) from a recognised university as on the cut-off date. Experience (mandatory): a minimum of 2 years as an officer in a Scheduled Commercial Bank or a Regional Rural Bank as on the cut-off. This experience requirement is the defining feature of CBO — clerical experience does not count, and freshers are not eligible. Age: 21-30 years (typically as on 31 December of the previous year), with standard relaxation (OBC +3, SC/ST +5, PwBD +10).

What 'Circle Based' means

Unlike SBI PO (an all-India transferable cadre), a CBO is recruited for and posted within a specific SBI circle (a state or group of states). Inter-circle transfer is generally not available for several years, which makes CBO attractive for experienced bankers who want to serve in their home region with stability. You choose your circle at the application stage and must know its local language.

Exam pattern

Online written test — 120 marks, 2 hours, covering English Language, Banking Knowledge, General Awareness/Economy, and Computer Aptitude (objective). Descriptive paper — 50 marks (letter writing + essay) testing banking communication, taken in the same sitting. After the test there is a document screening, an Interview of 50 marks, and a Local Language Test before joining. Negative marking applies in the objective section.

Selection process

Online Test (objective + descriptive) → Screening of applications → Interview → Local Language Test. The final merit is based on the online written test and the interview combined in a 75:25 weightage. Shortlisting for the interview is done from those who qualify the written test, subject to document verification of the experience claim.

Salary

SBI CBO is appointed in JMGS-I with the scale starting at a basic of ₹48,480 plus 2 advance increments, and with DA, HRA / leased accommodation, City Compensatory Allowance, PF/NPS and other perks the approximate in-hand salary is around ₹75,000-80,000/month depending on the posting location — comparable to SBI PO, with the added stability of a fixed circle.
