UPSC IFS Final Result 2026 With Marks — Indian Forest Service Examination 2025 PDF at upsc.gov.in — Analysis & Trends
What is the Indian Forest Service — and why this result matters
The Indian Forest Service (IFoS, often called IFS) is one of the three All-India Services — the other two being the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS). It was constituted in 1966 under the All-India Services Act, 1951. Officers manage the country's forests, biodiversity, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and the implementation of the Forest Conservation Act, Wildlife Protection Act, and the Compensatory Afforestation Fund (CAMPA). The cadre operates under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change at the Centre and state Forest Departments at the field level.
The IFS Final Result + Marks PDF is the last formal stage of the recruitment cycle that began with the common Prelims (held jointly with CSE). For recommended candidates, it triggers medical examination, document verification, and joining at IGNFA Dehradun. For non-recommended candidates, the marks PDF is a critical feedback document — it reveals exact strengths and weaknesses across the General English / GK / Optional papers and the Interview, informing the decision to re-attempt or shift to other recruitments.
How to check the IFS 2025 Result + download marks PDF
- Open upsc.gov.in on a desktop browser (the PDF view is easier than mobile).
- On the homepage, look at the "What's New" ticker on the right side or the "Examinations" → "Active Examinations" menu.
- Click the entry titled "Indian Forest Service Examination, 2025 — Declaration of Final Result" (or similarly worded).
- The recommended-candidates PDF opens — search for your roll number using Ctrl+F. The list is grouped by category (General / EWS / OBC / SC / ST / PwBD).
- For the individual marks PDF, return to the homepage after ~15 days and look under "Written Result & Marks" in the menu. Open the IFS 2025 marks file — it lists Roll Number, Name, Mains marks (out of 1400), Interview marks (out of 300), and Total (out of 1700) for every candidate who appeared in the Personality Test.
- Save both PDFs locally. The recommended-list PDF is the official appointment document; the marks PDF is your personal performance record.
Final merit formula — Mains 1400 + Interview 300 = 1700
Unlike Civil Services (where final merit is computed out of 2025: Mains 1750 + Interview 275), IFS uses a different structure:
| Stage | Component | Marks | Counts in Merit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelims | Paper-I GS + Paper-II CSAT | 200 + 200 | No — qualifying only |
| Mains Paper I | General English | 300 | Yes |
| Mains Paper II | General Knowledge | 300 | Yes |
| Mains Papers III + IV | Optional Subject 1 (2 sub-papers) | 400 | Yes |
| Mains Papers V + VI | Optional Subject 2 (2 sub-papers) | 400 | Yes |
| Personality Test | Interview | 300 | Yes |
| Total | — | 1700 | — |
The Prelims marks are completely discarded once a candidate qualifies for Mains. Final ranks are derived purely from the 1700 Mains + Interview total. Tie-breakers are resolved using age (older candidate ranked higher) per UPSC rules.
Optional subjects — choosing the right combination matters
IFS candidates choose any two from this 14-subject list: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Forestry, Geology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering. Two important rules:
- You cannot pick two from these triples: Agriculture + Agricultural Engineering + Animal Husbandry; Mathematics + Statistics; Botany + Forestry + Zoology — only one of each cluster is allowed.
- The optional combination drives 800 of 1400 Mains marks (57%) — so picking subjects you have an undergraduate / postgraduate foundation in is the single biggest scoring lever.
Recent topper patterns (from the 2023 and 2024 cycles) show Forestry + Botany and Agriculture + Zoology as the most common pairings among recommended candidates, given the field-relevant nature of these subjects.
What happens after the result — IGNFA Dehradun training
Recommended candidates receive an appointment letter from the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and report to the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun for a structured 2-year probation:
- Foundation Course (3-4 months): Held jointly with IAS / IPS / IRS probationers at LBSNAA Mussoorie or LBSNAA-equivalent. Covers general administration, public policy, India's Constitution, ethics in governance.
- Professional Course Year 1: Silviculture, forest mensuration, wildlife management, forest law, environmental economics, GIS + remote sensing, forest engineering. Includes a mid-course attachment with a working forest division.
- Professional Course Year 2: Specialised modules — wildlife biology, forest management plans, social forestry, joint forest management, eco-tourism, carbon-credit frameworks. Includes Himalayan trekking expeditions, an All-India tour covering different forest types, and a foreign-country attachment in some batches.
- Cadre allocation: Announced during the second year. Officers are allotted state cadres (AGMUT, Assam-Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K-Ladakh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur-Tripura, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal).
Probationers receive a stipend of approximately ₹56,100/month during training (Pay Level 10, 7th CPC). On confirmation as Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), the starting basic is ₹56,100 (Level 10) rising to Senior Time Scale (Level 11) after 4 years of service.
If you appeared but weren't recommended — interpreting the marks PDF
The marks PDF released ~15 days after the result is the most valuable document for re-attempt strategy. Look at:
- Mains paper-wise breakdown: Identify which paper(s) dragged your total. If General English fell below 100/300, focus on essay structure and grammar. If GK was below 110/300, the issue is breadth of current-affairs coverage.
- Optional balance: If one optional scored 240/400 and the other 160/400, the weaker optional needs either deeper study or replacement in your next attempt.
- Interview marks: The Personality Test is the most subjective component. A score below 150/300 typically signals a presentation gap — mock interviews with serving forest officers can dramatically improve this.
- Total vs cut-off: The recommended-candidates PDF doesn't publish cut-offs explicitly, but the last recommended rank in each category gives an approximate floor. Compare your total to that floor to gauge re-attempt feasibility.
Candidates with 6 attempts remaining (per UPSC rules) typically re-attempt within the next 1-2 cycles. Those who've exhausted attempts often pivot to State Forest Service exams (state PSC equivalents) or Indian Forest Officers' Association cadres at the central level.
