  • Day 1 — Screening Test. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) verbal + non-verbal reasoning, plus a Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT). About 60% of the batch is screened out the same evening.

Training and pay

Selected officers join the Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal, Hyderabad for the July 2027 batch. Training duration: 74 weeks for Flying Branch (3 phases — joint stage + advanced stage + fighter / transport / helicopter conversion), 52 weeks for Ground Duty. Cadet stipend during training is approximately ₹56,100 per month.

On Passing Out Parade, you commission as a Flying Officer on Pay Level 10 of the 7th CPC matrix: basic ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500, plus Military Service Pay (₹15,500), Flying Pay (₹25,000 for Flying Branch), Technical Pay (Ground Duty Technical), HRA / TPT / Kit allowances. Promotions are time-scale through Flight Lieutenant (2 years), Squadron Leader (6 years), Wing Commander (13 years), Group Captain (selection above that). Permanent Commission is available to women officers from 2020 onwards.

What to do between now and 19 June

  • Apply early. afcat.edcil.co.in is known to slow down in the final 48 hours of every cycle.
  • Triple-check that your Class 12 PCM marks and graduation percentage meet the 50% and 60% thresholds — wrong entries here are the most common reason for rejection at the AFCAT scrutiny stage.
  • If applying to Flying, get an eye check now. 6/6 vision in each eye without glasses is the standard; any deviation needs the IAF Medical Manual reference.
  • Start your written preparation today. 4-5 weeks of focused preparation on previous-year AFCAT papers + Officer Intelligence Rating drills + current affairs will put a 200+ score within reach.
  • If you've held a Commercial Pilot Licence, you get up to 26 years of age — but only on the Flying upper limit. Document this carefully on the application form.

For other Defence officer entries in the same cycle, see our Indian Army TES 56 page (10+2 entry, 90 vacancies). For the wider officer-entry calendar, follow our UPSC tracker.
