📚 NEET UG Syllabus 2026 — Physics + Chemistry + Biology from NCERT Class 11 + 12
NEET UG is the single most competitive medical-entrance examination in India — typically 23-24 lakh candidates apply annually, with around 1.1 lakh MBBS seats nationwide. The syllabus is entirely based on NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 textbooks for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology). NMC has trimmed some topics in recent revisions; those deletions carry into NEET 2026. Below is the chapter-wise breakdown, weightage, and prep strategy.
Exam pattern at a glance
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Share of Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 45 | 180 | 25% |
| Chemistry | 45 | 180 | 25% |
| Biology — Botany | 45 | 180 | 25% |
| Biology — Zoology | 45 | 180 | 25% |
| TOTAL | 180 | 720 | 100% |
Mode: offline pen-paper OMR exam · Duration 180 minutes (3 hours) · Marking +4 / -1 / 0. Biology alone is 50% of total marks — make it your strongest subject.

Preparation strategy — 12-month framework
- Foundation (months 1-3): Read NCERT Class 11 + 12 textbooks for all 3 subjects cover-to-cover, line-by-line. NCERT IS the syllabus — do NOT skip lines, diagrams, captions, or marginal text. ~40-50% of NEET questions are directly from NCERT lines.
- Concept building (months 4-6): Standard reference books for deeper understanding — H.C. Verma + D.C. Pandey for Physics, O.P. Tandon for Chemistry, Trueman's + S. Chand for Biology. Solve chapter-wise MCQs.
- Application + previous papers (months 7-9): Solve last 15-20 years of NEET papers (2010 onwards) and AIIMS / JIPMER papers. Pattern repeats — Human Physiology questions especially recycle direction.
- Revision + mocks (months 10-12): 30-40 full-length mocks at exam-day timing (2 PM-5 PM IST). Negative-marking discipline matters — at 720/180-question scale, every -5-net-mark wrong drops your AIR by 200-300 places.
- Last 2 weeks: NCERT one final pass + formula sheets + diagram sheets. NO new books or topics.
Recommended books per subject
- Physics: NCERT Class 11 + 12 (Part I + II for each) · H.C. Verma — Concepts of Physics · D.C. Pandey — Objective Physics for NEET · Errorless Physics
- Chemistry: NCERT Class 11 + 12 · O.P. Tandon for Physical + Inorganic · Morrison & Boyd or M.S. Chouhan for Organic · Dinesh Objective Chemistry
- Biology: NCERT Class 11 + 12 (most important) · Trueman's Elementary Biology Vol 1 + 2 · Pradeep's Biology · GR Bathla's Objective Biology · MTG Fingertips for revision

Counselling + admission flow
NEET counselling has two parallel tracks:
- All-India 15% Quota (MCC): Medical Counselling Committee at mcc.nic.in. Open to all candidates regardless of state domicile. Includes seats at central institutes (AIIMS, JIPMER, BHU, AMU, DU, AFMC), and 15% of state government college seats. Multiple rounds: Round 1 → Round 2 → Mop-up → Stray Vacancy.
- State 85% Quota: Each state runs its own counselling via the state Director of Medical Education / state government portal. Domicile requirements vary by state. Most state government college seats fall here.
AIR ranges (recent cycles):
- AIIMS New Delhi MBBS: AIR 1-50
- AIIMS satellite (Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur etc.): AIR 50-500
- JIPMER Puducherry: AIR 50-200
- Top state government colleges (Maulana Azad Delhi, Madras Medical, KMC Manipal): AIR 500-2000
- State quota government MBBS (most states): State category rank cut-off varies — UP top: AIR 5000-15000; Maharashtra: AIR 3000-10000; Tamil Nadu: AIR 2000-7000
