SSC CGL Selection Stages — and why Tier-1 isn't your final score
Selection ran Tier-1 → Tier-2 → final, and the final merit is built entirely on Tier-2 normalized marks — Tier-1 is qualifying only. This is the most common SSC misunderstanding: clearing the Tier-1 cut-off only means you sat Tier-2; it does not add to your final merit.
| Stage | Date (CGLE-2025) |
|---|---|
| Tier-1 result | 18 December 2025 |
| Tier-2 exam | 18–19 January 2026 |
| Tier-2 result + cut-off | 8 April 2026 |
| Final result | 14 May 2026 |
SSC CGL Cut-off — Category-wise (Tier-1) & Year Comparison
The final cut-off is post-wise and computed on Tier-2 marks; the Tier-1 category cut-off gives a useful year-on-year picture (note: 2025 cut-offs fell from 2024):
| Category | CGL 2025 | CGL 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 136.40 | 153.18 |
| OBC | 130.36 | 146.23 |
| EWS | 127.41 | 142.01 |
| SC | 115.02 | 126.42 |
| ST | 106.38 | 111.85 |
(Cut-off decimals vary slightly across trackers; verify on the official SSC cut-off PDF. The post-wise final cut-off — e.g. JSO runs highest — is in the SSC result PDF.)
What happens after the final result — post allocation & joining
Post allocation is merit-cum-preference, finalised through SSC's sliding-scale / First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA): recommended candidates book a slot, order their post preferences and exercise a fix/float option. Being selected does not guarantee your first-choice post — a lower rank with high preferences can mean a non-preferred post. After the result, document verification and appointment are handled by the allocated user department (not SSC), and joining dates are staggered by each department.
SSC CGL Tie-breaking Rules
When final Tier-2 normalized marks are identical, SSC resolves the order by: (1) higher Tier-2 Section-I (Quant) marks → (2) Section-II (English) → (3) Section-III → (4) older date of birth → (5) alphabetical name order. With 5-decimal normalization, exact ties are now rare.
Practical Tips
- Two PDFs: JSO/SI Grade-II have a separate list from all other posts — check the right one.
- Normalized marks: Tier-2 marks are shift-adjusted to 5 decimals, so raw answer-key estimates won't match your scorecard.
- DV is by the department, not SSC — wait for your allocated department's call; carry originals + self-attested copies.
- Cycle naming: this is the CGL 2025 final result; last year's CGL 2024 cycle recommended 18,174 (declared 13 March 2025).

Why two merit lists — List-1 vs List-2
SSC released the CGL 2025 result in two separate merit panels because eligibility and paper structure differ across post groups:
- List-1 — JSO + Statistical Investigator: These posts require a Statistics-specific Tier-2 paper (Paper II — Statistics). Merit is calculated using Paper I + Paper II combined. Posts go to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and other allied departments.
- List-2 — Other CGL posts: Inspector of Income Tax (CBDT), Inspector of Central Excise (CBIC), Assistant Section Officer (MEA / CAG / Ministry of Railways / others), Auditor, Accountant, Tax Assistant, Sub-Inspector (CBI / NIA), Postal Inspector and so on. Merit is calculated from Paper I (combined Section I + II + III) only, with AAO / AAuO candidates getting an additional Paper III (Finance + Economics).
The lists are non-overlapping. A candidate's name appears in exactly one list based on the posts applied for during the option-cum-preference window (held 9-12 March 2026).
Next steps — Document Verification + Joining
With no waiting list, the recommended candidates will move directly to departmental verification. The general flow:
- Allotment notice from SSC — typically within 4-6 weeks of the final result. SSC publishes a separate notice mapping each Roll Number to a specific department + post code.
- Department contact — CBDT, CBIC, MEA, CAG, Railways, Intelligence Bureau, NIA, Postal each have a separate DV cell. Candidates receive an email + dak notification with the DV venue and date.
- Documents to carry: Class 10 + 12 certificates, Bachelor's degree marksheet + provisional / final degree, age proof, category certificate (SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS) in the prescribed central-government format, PwBD certificate (if applicable), photo ID, recent passport-sized photographs, and the printed online application from the original SSC CGL 2025 submission.
- Medical fitness (where applicable) — Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors undergo a Physical Standards Test + medical exam at the allotting department's CGHS hospital.
- Joining + probation — Final joining at the allotted office, typically June-September 2026 depending on department. Two-year probation applies; inter-departmental transfer is normally barred during probation.
For sister recruitment tracks while you await your joining order, see SSC CGL 2026 (next cycle) and SSC GD Constable. For graduate-level Railway parallels, RRB NTPC covers comparable Group C posts.
Did not clear the cut-off?
SSC has confirmed no waiting list for CGL 2025. Candidates not on either merit list have the following next steps:
- SSC CGL 2026 cycle — Notification typically releases in June each year. Apply when the notice goes live at our CGL 2026 hub. With ~15,000+ vacancies expected, CGL 2026 offers the next major shot at the same posts.
- Cross-apply to parallel central recruitments — RRB NTPC covers Railway graduate-level posts. IBPS PO covers Bank Probationary Officer roles (similar selection rigour, decent prep overlap with CGL Quant + Reasoning).
- Re-evaluate weak sections — Section I (Math + Reasoning) decides ~60% of the CGL 2025 final merit. Focus aggressive prep on previous-year Tier-2 papers and section-wise speed drills before the CGL 2026 notification drops.
- Watch for departmental direct recruitments — CBDT, CBIC, CAG and Railways periodically release direct recruitment for Inspector / ASO / Auditor / Accountant posts outside the CGL channel. These typically have smaller vacancies but lower competition.
