Eligibility & Age Limit

Age Limit: —–30 years as on For JRF: 30 years as on the first day of the application month (01 April 2026 typically). No age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission.

For JRF: SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD/Third Gender/Female candidates get 5 years relaxation. Research experience (subject to UGC norms) up to 5 years. LLM candidates 3 years. Defence service candidates per UGC rules.

Selection Process

  4. Result + Three Outcomes — NTA publishes the final result with three category flags per candidate: (a) Qualified for JRF + Assistant Professor + PhD admission, (b) Qualified for Assistant Professor + PhD admission, (c) Qualified for PhD admission only.
  5. PhD Admission / JRF Award / Faculty Recruitment — JRF certificate valid for 3 years. Universities use UGC NET scores for PhD admission (per UGC 2024 amendment). Faculty recruitment uses Assistant Professor eligibility as a prerequisite.

Negative marking: No negative marking in UGC NET. +2 marks for each correct answer; 0 for unattempted or wrong.

What UGC NET is
