CSIR UGC NET 2026 Eligibility

You need an M.Sc or equivalent (BS-4yr / BE / BTech / B.Pharma / MBBS / Integrated BS-MS) with 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender); final-year students may apply. The JRF age limit is 30 years (as on 1 July 2026), with up to 5 years' relaxation for SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender/Women and 3 years for OBC-NCL. There is no age limit for Assistant Professor/Lectureship.

The five subjects and exam pattern

CSIR NET is offered in five subjects: Chemical Sciences; Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences; Life Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; and Physical Sciences. The exam is a single CBT paper of 200 marks in 3 hours, with three parts — Part A (general aptitude), Part B (subject MCQs) and Part C (higher-order analytical questions) — and negative marking (the rate varies by subject).

What does CSIR NET qualify you for?

Based on your score, CSIR NET gives JRF (Junior Research Fellowship), Assistant Professor/Lectureship eligibility, and PhD admission eligibility. The JRF cut-off is higher than the Lectureship cut-off; over-age or lower-scoring qualifiers are considered for Lectureship only.

Practical Tips

  • Choose your subject carefully — it must match your Master's specialisation and can't be changed after the correction window.
  • CSIR NET ≠ UGC NET — CSIR NET is the five science subjects; UGC NET covers humanities/commerce/social sciences.
  • JRF is age-bound (30), not attempt-bound — there is no fixed attempt limit.
  • Keep your Application Number safe — you'll need it (with DOB/password) for the admit card later.
