For engineering diploma and degree holders, RRB JE, ALP, and Technician differ sharply on pay level, role, and entry. JE (Pay Level 6) is the highest-paying supervisory route; ALP is an operating role with running allowances; Technician is the maintenance track across two grades. This guide compares all three.

TL;DR
- For engineering diploma/degree holders, the pay order is JE > Technician Grade 1 > ALP / Technician Grade 3.
- RRB JE is the highest — Pay Level 6 (basic ₹35,400), a supervisory engineering role — and needs a diploma or degree in engineering.
- RRB ALP sits at Pay Level 2 but, as running staff, earns allowances that push gross pay to roughly ₹35,000–₹40,000; it is an operating (train-driving) role.
- RRB Technician is a maintenance role: Grade 1 (Pay Level 5, diploma/degree) and Grade 3 (Pay Level 2, 10th+ITI).
- Pick by qualification and role: degree/diploma + want a desk engineering career → JE; want operating work with allowances → ALP; want asset maintenance → Technician.
If you have an engineering diploma or degree (or an ITI) and want a railway job, the three technical routes are RRB JE, ALP, and Technician. They differ sharply on pay level, the kind of work, and entry difficulty. This guide compares them for engineers so you target the one that fits your qualification and the career you want. For live technical railway vacancies, see the Engineering Jobs hub and the RRB ALP 2026 form.
Quick comparison
| RRB JE | RRB ALP | RRB Technician | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role | Supervisory engineer | Assistant Loco Pilot (operating) | Asset/equipment maintenance |
| Min qualification | Diploma/degree in engineering | 10th + ITI (or diploma) | Gr 1: diploma/degree · Gr 3: 10th+ITI / 12th science |
| Pay level | Level 6 (₹35,400) | Level 2 (₹19,900) + running allowance | Gr 1: Level 5 (₹29,200) · Gr 3: Level 2 (₹19,900) |
| Selection | CBT-1 → CBT-2 → DV → Medical | CBT-1 → CBT-2 → CBAT → DV → Medical | CBT → DV → Medical |
| Best for | Highest pay, desk engineering | Operating role + allowances | Maintenance career |
In-hand depends on city and current DA; ALP's running allowances materially raise take-home beyond the basic level suggests.
RRB JE — the highest-paying technical route
The Junior Engineer post is the top of the technical ladder here. It needs an engineering diploma or degree in a relevant discipline (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and others), sits at Pay Level 6 (basic ₹35,400), and is a supervisory role — planning, inspection, and overseeing maintenance and works rather than doing the hands-on repair yourself. Selection is CBT-1 → CBT-2 → document verification → medical. If you hold a diploma or degree and want the highest pay and a desk-and-field engineering career with strong growth, JE is the clear pick. See the live RRB JE page.
RRB ALP — operating role with running allowances
The Assistant Loco Pilot is an operating post — you assist in running locomotives, the path toward becoming a Loco Pilot. It needs 10th plus an ITI (or a relevant diploma), sits at Pay Level 2 (basic ₹19,900), but as running staff it earns mileage and running allowances that lift gross pay to roughly ₹35,000–₹40,000 in the early stages. The selection adds a CBAT aptitude test and a strict medical (sharp vision). For a diploma holder it pays less in basic terms than JE, but the allowances and the distinctive driving career make it attractive — and it is open to ITI holders who are not eligible for JE. RRB Technician — the maintenance track, two grades
Technician is a maintenance role — keeping signals, rolling stock, and equipment running. It splits into two grades. Grade 1 (Signal) sits at Pay Level 5 (basic ₹29,200) and needs a diploma or degree in engineering (or B.Sc with relevant subjects). Grade 3 sits at Pay Level 2 (basic ₹19,900) and is open to 10th + ITI or 12th-science candidates. Selection is a CBT followed by document verification and medical — generally a shorter funnel than ALP since there is no CBAT. If you want a stable technical maintenance career, Technician Grade 1 is a strong diploma-level option just below JE. See the ITI Jobs hub for Grade 3 eligibility.
How to choose
Start with your qualification. Diploma or degree in engineering? JE is your highest-pay target, with Technician Grade 1 as a strong backup at one pay level lower. 10th + ITI only? You are choosing between ALP (operating, with allowances) and Technician Grade 3 (maintenance) — ALP usually pays more in gross terms thanks to running allowances, but has the extra CBAT and stricter medical. Then weigh the work itself: supervisory engineering (JE), train operating (ALP), or equipment maintenance (Technician). The CBT syllabuses overlap on engineering fundamentals, maths, reasoning, and general awareness, so build that base once and specialise toward the post that matches your qualification and the role you want. For where these sit among other technical options, see engineering government jobs.
RRB JE vs ALP vs Technician:
